Flagstaff Alpine Ski Team (FAST)

ALPINE SKI & SKI RACING

(Information for the 2020/2021 season)

Our goal is to teach kids all mountain awareness and safety while learning how to ski the entire mountain and HAVE FUN. We have a 16 week curriculum of skills and have quite a few Level 100 and Level 200 USSA certified coaches. Our coaches are passionate about winter sports, fun and teaching our youth how to ski or board. We try to fit in all 16 weeks of coaching depending upon what mother nature offers for snow!

The Flagstaff Alpine Ski Team is the starting point for all skiers, though once a skier can ski the whole mountain, they can decide to stay on the Flagstaff Alpine Ski Team and train for racing or move to the Grand Canyon Freeride Team and focus on backcountry, moguls or the park.

The athletes are grouped by age, maturity, and skiing ability. We are a small program and also pretty flexible…… if you have a request for your child to ski with a friend or sibling and they are like abilities please let us know. We will do our best to accommodate as we can. However, please also understand we try to group by ability and as some progress faster than others, we may need to adjust the groups as the season progresses.

WHAT TO EXPECT ON TRAINING DAYS

Please click here to access the Parent / Athlete manual for a more in depth look at expectations (link to parent / athlete manual)

  • Meet at the Ski Shacks (located just south of the Agassiz Lodge), 15 minutes prior to the start of training (suited and booted)
  • If you are late, please wait at the Ski Shacks and coaches will come by to check for late arrivals for the first few runs. You may let any coach that comes by and they can contact your athlete’s coach.
  • Athletes will be placed in groups based on ability first and age second.
  • Coaches will use a variety of drills each training day to help the athletes improve without feeling like they are being told what to do all day long.
  • On weekends we break for lunch around 11am.  Athletes may store lunches in the team building, or purchase lunch from the lodge. We ask that only athletes that purchase food sit inside the lodge. You are more than welcome to join your athlete for lunch.
  • The afternoon session will be dependent on how morning training went and the goals for the day.
  • At the end of the day you will meet your athlete at the team building to pick them up. At this time, you may check in with coaches to see how the day went and ask any questions you may have.

All-Mountain Team

(formerly known as “In-town”)

This team teaches kids to love skiing and love spending time on the mountain.  It is designed to help skiers develop strong fundamental skiing skills, mountain awareness and confidence. Our coaches are trained to provide a safe and fun environment to help develop a lifelong love of skiing. Skills are taught and measured using the US Ski & Snowboard SkillsQuest Curriculum over our 16 week season.

We keep the coach to athlete ratio small at 1:5 or even 1:4 at the entry level. The child may move up in ability groups at any time based upon their progress. All children are encouraged to participate in our local races at Snowbowl, try moguls, powder, and easy terrain park features. As the athlete progresses or shows particular interest, we offer the ability to specialize or try the varied types of skiing available.
